Hand Dryer Not Working? 7 Common Problems and How to Fix Them

August 04, 2026

Quick Answer

If the hand dryer not working, check the issues from tripped breakers, dirty sensors, or clogged intake filters. Reset the power breaker, clean the optic sensor lens, and look for internal component connections if a hand dryer error code suddenly appears on digital displays.

This guide covers a step-by-step hand dryer troubleshooting to quickly help restore the equipment into normal function, while giving you an overview of Interhasa’s durable hand dryers for better washroom areas.

Dryer Won’t Turn On / Won’t Start?

In case the hand dryer stops responding at all, the problem may be due to lack of power or malfunctioning of the internal fuses.

Check Power Supply & Circuit Breaker

  1. Check the main distribution panel for any tripped breakers.
  1. Use the digital multimeter to check for input voltage.
  1. Check internal terminal boards for any loose connections.
  1. Check for any thermal fuse that may have tripped inside the control board.

Note: In case power is received but not activation, check fuses on the internal board.

Weak or No Airflow?

Air velocity that is too low is indicative of physical obstruction and/or motor malfunction. Examine the intake grill to see if there is any dust accumulation. Dirty HEPA air filters will limit intake volume and overheat the motor. Therefore, clean washable pre-filters or replace disposable HEPA air filters.

Additionally, inspect the carbon brushes of the motor if it is a conventional motor using brushes. Worn brushes reduce RPMs and decrease total air volume output.

Blowing Cold Air Instead of Warm?

The problem of cold output could arise from a defective heating element or heating switch. In most modern commercial models, there is an inbuilt heating switch. The toggle switch should always be in ON position.

Note: If the element shows open circuit resistance during multimeter testing, replace the heating assembly.

Sensor Not Detecting Hands?

Infrared sensors may not work if the optical lens gets covered by soap film, dust, or water stains. Use a soft microfiber cloth to clean the infrared sensor lens.

Adjust Sensor Range

  1. Turn off power source.
  1. Unscrew cover plate security screws.
  1. Find the potentiometer dial on the sensor circuit board.
  1. Rotate dial clockwise to extend detection range.
  1. Replace the cover and turn the power back on for testing.

Note: In case of high reflection from stainless steel sinks, the sensitivity should be reduced.

Unusual Noise?

A hand dryer stopped working after producing scraping noises suggests mechanical failure. Mounting screws that are loose cause vibration of the housing on tile walls. Make sure you have tightened all mounting bolts securely into the wall anchors.

Moreover, a screech sound suggests bearing wear out in the motor. While a rattle noise means there are objects inside the housing of the impeller. Clear debris immediately to avoid motor burnout.

Dryer Runs Continuously?

Continuous use wears out the motors and wastes electricity. Optical sensors trigger constantly when direct sunlight strikes the receiver lens. Dirty optical sensors activate the circuits continuously as well. Clean the optical sensors completely. If this does not help, then the triac relay on the PCB board is short-circuited, needing board replacement.

How Long Should a Hand Dryer Last?

Typically, the operational life of commercial hand dryers ranges from 7 to 10 years depending on the usage frequency, cleaning procedures, and quality of construction materials used in manufacturing them. Notably, dryers that use brushless DC motors have a longer lifespan because there is no physical contact.

Repair vs. Replace

When to Repair?

Repair the hardware if faults occur due to simple parts such as optical sensors, intake filters, or external switches. Additionally, if the repair cost is below 50% of the price of buying a new one, just replacing or repairing the parts is still cost effective.

When to Replace? (Recommendation + Advantages)

Replace units experiencing total motor failure, cracked casings, or severe circuit board damage. Upgrading to direct manufacturers, like Interhasa hand dryers, lowers facility operating expenses.

Direct benefits to the manufacturer include:

  • Energy savings for reduced electricity consumption.
  • Brushless motor design for increased durability.
  • HEPA filters for improved washroom air quality.
  • Factory warranties and technical support.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What could be the reasons why my hand dryer isn’t working?

  • If a hand dryer is not working, one should consider first examining the power supply or fuse. Second, there could be problems with the infrared sensor, a tripped circuit breaker, or there may be internal failures like faulty carbon brush or a circuit board connection.

What is the most common dryer problem?

  • The most common dryer problem is limited airflow due to the accumulation of lint in the filter or exhaust vent. It results in slow drying and other issues like overheating and popping of the thermal fuse.

What are some common reasons why my dryer isn’t working?

  • The reasons why a dryer isn’t working include power source problems, thermal fuse failure, door switch damage, or a torn drive belt.
